Artist Statement - Textiles in Metal |
||||
|
I began weaving textiles from metal after spending a semester abroad in the United Kingdom. I became enthralled with the majesty of English and Scottish history, namely the prodigious gowns worn by Elizabeth I. Upon returning from this experience I began studying costume design, and started creating work inspired by historical clothing. More recently I began designing collars that consist of simple shapes repeated to create complicated forms. I enjoy making jewelry that is both elegant and dramatic, and strive to make work that makes the wearer feel beautiful. I have chosen insulated copper wire as the medium because it is an industrial material traditionally used in electronics, yet has the ability to create elegant textural forms when manipulated by crochet and other textile techniques. I also enjoy the reflective quality of the metal wire under the transparent plastic coating, as this reflected light gives the pieces a subtle illumination. | |||||
